Interim manager Lee Carsley, signed off in style as England captalised on Liam Scales’ sending off in a 5-0 thrashing of the Republic of Ireland that sealed promotion to the Nations League top tier.
But who impressed under Carsely’s tenure as England manager? Mike McGrath runs the rule over the Three Lions.
Dropped for Finland after poor display at home to Greece but showed class with saves i in Athens. His appearances makes him equal with Gordon Banks’ 75 caps and should win more under Tuchel. 7/10
Carsley made it clear he sees him at right-back and gave him licence to be a playmaker in that role, often “inverted”. But he also filled in at left-back and his set-pieces and passing are important. 8/10
Vote of confidence picking him at left-back in opener against Ireland but was part of shaky backline against Greece despite stunning goalline clearance. One of the dropouts for final camp. 4/10
Looked good when on the pitch for Carsley – in fact, he never gets himself in trouble. When he was absent, against Greece, the backline looked worse for it. 8/10
Played in opening win over Ireland in Dublin but dropped for the October internationals and has not played since due to injury. Was picked due to previous work with England and now has to prove himself to Tuchel. 4/10

Shock omission for Athens win, having missed the defeat to the Greeks at Wembley. Performed well in his 100th England appearance, against Greece, and scored penalty against Ireland – but quiet moments as well. 7/10
Scored with first touch against Ireland after call-up for cover. having been dropped for the October internationals. Only sub appearances but good impact with his goal. 6/10
Important player for Carsley after helping him with Under-21 Euros. He started in four matches after being overlooked by Gareth Southgate. Looked lively on left wing and took goal well in final game before Tuchel starts. 7/10
Looked very assured in his starts, both against Finland, when he could dictate pace of game in front of defence. Came off bench against Ireland when game was won. 5/10
Suffered injury against Greece and was injured for the current camp. So can only be judged on first two matches when he looked threatening despite some rough treatment. 6/10
Will be useful to Tuchel for his versatility. Played both full-back roles including the problem left-back position and “inverted” into midfield. But guilty of error for Greece winner. 6/10
Solid performances in starts against Finland and Greece before injury cut his evening short in Athens. Good option at centre-back going forward after stepping in when needed at the Euros. 7/10
Given his first opportunity at senior level by Carsley and took his chance. Very direct play from the right wing and was among best players in vital Athens win, lively against Ireland. 7/10
One start, one goal. Carsley really wanted to give the Aston Villa striker a reward for his season and he grabbed the opener against Greece. Needs to be a Plan B without Kane and he is an option. 6/10
The Premier League’s best current player was victim of Carsley trying to fit all his attacking players into the team against Greece. Injured for first and last camp. Will have a fresh start in 2025. 4/10
Clearly an important player for Tuchel, carrying England forward from midfield. He needs to cut out the yellow cards for dissent but the attacks will go through him. Two assists against Ireland. 7/10
Only started in the Greece defeat when he was a False Nine in a 4-4-2 which simply did not work. Has been unlucky again with injuries and will look to get regularly available under Tuchel. 3/10
Provided assist when he came off the bench against Greece, his second England cap some seven years after his first. Used off the bench against Irish. 5/10
Given a surprise chance in Helsinki and performed well – no chance with their goal. Carsley wanted to give another keeper a chance rather than rely solely on Pickford. 5/10

Fantastic finish with header on his debut. Carsley had promised him be would get into the England team after winning the Under-21 Euros – and he was good to his word with his cap against Ireland. 6/10
